SHOUT!

This miniature graphic novel tells the story of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, “The Godmother of Rock n Roll”. Tharpe’s signature style fused Gospel, Delta Blues, and New Orleans Jazz to create a unique sound that would precursor household names such as Chuck Berry, Elvis, and more. Despite this, Tharpe’s legacy would remain untold for decades. Tharpe was known for her powerful voice, distinctive guitar style, background in both Gospel and secular sound, and the racial and gender barriers she broke.

The cover aims to express this by having her shred the guitar and “Shout” —a way of praise in Gospel, and a display of the raw power in her voice. The monochromatic blue palette seen throughout the novel references the heavy influence the Blues played in Tharpe’s musical journey.
